Home School Curriculum.

Homeschooling Options

For many people, homeschooling may call to mind the picture of two or three
children sitting at a table and writing feverishly in their workbooks, while
mom or dad stands nearby. This is the not entirely true. There are different
methods of homeschooling, and the method you choose will decide the
curriculum and your style of teaching. Given below are some of the most
influential and popular homeschooling methods.

The Charlotte Mason method:
Charlotte Mason is known as the founder of the homeschooling movement.
A homeschooler herself, she was passionate in her zeal to lay out the foundations
for an effective and complete homeschooling program that is fun and educational
at the same time. This method focuses on all the core subjects with emphasis
placed on classical literature, poetry, fine arts, classical music and craft. Mason
used a variety of books from classical literature, which she called 'Living Books'.

Since this method encourages a passionate awareness of literature, the child is
read to daily from the 'Living Books'. After this, the child is asked to narrate
what she has heard. This process begins at the age of six, and by ten the child
is expected to write her narrations in her book. Mason also advocated the use
of 'Nature Diaries'.

After each short and interesting lesson, the child is asked to go to Nature and
draw observations from Nature. Thus the child also gains a sense of respect
for her environment. Mason believed that development of good character
and behavior was essential to the complete development of the child's personality.

The Eclectic Homeschooling:
This is a mixture of various homeschooling techniques. Here, the innovative
parents trust their own judgment and pick out the topics that make the best
curriculum for their child. Such parents continuously look out for the best
products that will meet the needs of their homeschoolers. Most Eclectic
homeschooling curriculums are improvised. This means that the basic curriculum
is ready-made. The parents then make changes in the curriculum to accommodate
the individual needs and interests of their children. The child's gifts, temperament,
learning style and interests dictate the curriculum. Eclectic programs include
visits to the museum, libraries and factories.

Unschooling:
A Boston public educator name John Holt laid the beginnings of the unschooling
method. He believed that children learned best when they are free to learn at their
own pace and when they are guided by their own interests. His message was to
'unschool' the child. This method is a hands-on approach to learning, where the
parent takes definite cues from the children. There is no definite curriculum,
schedules or materials. This method is the most unstructured of the various
home schooling techniques.

The Montessori Method:
This method began in Italy, when it was observed that children have acute
sensitive periods, during which they undergo periods of intense concentration.
During such phases, a child will repeat an activity till he gains a measure of
self-satisfaction. The Montessori method depends on a prepared environment to
facilitate learning. All the materials used in this method are designed to satisfy
the inner desire for spiritual development of the child. The materials used progress
from simple to complex, and are rather expensive.

These are just a few of the methods of homeschooling. Whatever the method, the
underlying factor is flexibility and a keen interest in the desires of the child.

The secret is to use the child's desire for knowledge to further his education.

Eating Healthy.

Nutrition For The Elderly

Healthy eating and nutrition for the elderly is greatly impacted by
several factors, one of them being a change in body composition.
During the later years in life, the body will lose bone and
muscle and gain fat because the hormones aren'tvery active
anymore.

There are many factors which hinder an elderly person's health.
The information below will help you to lead a healthy life,
no matter how old you may be.

Water
Water in the body decreases with age, so many older folks will
become dehydrated very easily.  Sometimesthey won't feel thirsty,
while other times it's too much work to pour a glass a water.  With this
in mind, it's recommended that they drink at least1 ounce of water for
every 2.2 pounds of weight.

Protein
At this stage in life, protein is very important.Protein is needed to
support a healthy immune system and prevent the wasting of muscle.
Since energy needs are less, older folks should eat highquality protein
such as eggs, lean meats, poultry, and fish.

Carbs and fiber
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy forthe entire body.  You
can find carbs in bread, cereals, pasta, and other grain products.  A diet
that's high in fiber and water will help to prevent constipation as well.

Fat
Fat intake for the elderly should be limited, not eliminated.  You can
limit fat by choosing lean meats, low fat dairy products, and food
preparation methods that don't include frying.

Iron
For the elderly, iron deficiency can be seen withthose who aren't eating
much.  Good sources foriron include lean red meats or breakfast cereals.

Zinc
Zinc intake is normally with the elderly, and to make matters worse,
it's not absorbed very well either.  Meat, poultry, and fish should be a
part of your diet to help you meet the requirements for zinc.

Calcium
Calcium is one ingredient that most elderly folkssimply aren't getting
enough of.  Most believe that milk upsets their stomach, and therefore
they will avoid it.  They should be getting around 1,500mg of calcium a
day, and nonfat powdered milk canbe used in recipes as a substitute for
milk.  Other foods such as yogurt, low fat cheese, and broccolican also
help you meet the requirements for calcium.

Vitamin B12
In order to absorb the benefits of B12, the intrinsicfactor must be
produced by the stomach.  Most elderly people suffer from a deficiency
in B12 because they have a condition known as atrophic gastritis.  This
condition causes inflammation of the stomach, bacterial overgrowth, and
the intrinsic factor. Without the intrinsic factor, this vitamin can be
absorbed.

Each one of the above nutrients are needed to keep an aged body in good
health.  Elderly individuals should try to stay active and strive for a well
balanced diet.  Even though the aged body isn't thesame as it used to be,
proper care and the right nutrients can help the elderly enjoy a healthy and
long life.

How To Be A Pilot.

Certified to Fly

When you first got the vision to become a pilot, how did you see yourself?  For some of us it is at the controls of a jumbo jet operated by one of the big airline companies flying from one exotic location to another and having the power and responsibility for that billion dollar airplane and hundreds of lives.

For others it's being a private pilot for a small airline flying rich people around or just flying for your own pleasure.  You are free, literally “as a bird” to glide over the world gazing down and deciding where you might land before taking to the air again.

These are fun images and even as you work your way through flight school and then start “paying your dues” in the airline industry to work toward your goal, its good to keep the dream so you always have the next rung of the ladder ahead and you never give up.

It's good to have a firm idea of who you want to be as a pilot because it actually affects the kind of pilot's certification you will go for after flight school.  So understanding the different kinds of certification and what is required to meet the requirements for that level of responsibility can be important.   Of course, your goals may change the longer you stay in your career as a pilot.  But if you know going in what is required, you can tailor and customize your training and preparations around your goals.

There are actually six levels of pilot certification, one of which you may already have.  If you are already in flight school and you have reached the point that you are taking training flights and handling the craft yourself, you already have a student pilot certification.  All pilots' certifications have requirements and restrictions so obviously as a student pilot, you can only operate an airline in the instructional setting and not on your own except for your final solo flights as authorized by the school.

Just above the student level but a pilot's certification that you can use for your own purposes are the sports and the recreational pilot's license.  These certifications are less restrictive than the student's license but you will be limited to fly only in good weather conditions and strong daylight, that your distances will be limited as will the type of aircraft.  You can also only have one passenger with a student license.  What the FAA has created in the sports and recreational licenses are certifications that allow for some enjoyment level flying but are not certified at a high enough level to make being a pilot your career.

The top three levels of pilot's licenses are the private pilot license, the commercial pilot and the airline transport license.  The names are fairly self explanatory.  Often new pilots try to reach the private pilot level before going on for the more demanding higher level licenses.  With a private pilot license, you can operate a much greater variety of aircraft including helicopters and balloons and you can use your pilot's license as part of your job although you cannot be paid for flying. So your job may be crop dusting and you are paid for that and your ability to fly a small aircraft is in connection with your job.

Obviously the commercial pilot's certification and the airline transport pilot's license are the ones you would go for to be able to fly the big jets.  But you may never need to get that far.  So evaluate your goals and target your certification accordingly.  In that way you are using your training time well and when you have reached the level you aspire to, you will get that sense of satisfaction that you are a pilot who is realizing your dream.

Publishing A Book.

Getting a Book Published:  Common Mistakes You Want to Avoid

Do you have a book that you would like to see published?  If so, you may be interested in getting started right away.  As soon as an author finishes their book, they want to start approaching publishers as soon as possible.  While it is more than possible to take this approach, you also want to proceed with caution.  There are many common mistakes that new authors make when looking to get a book published.  These are not mistakes that you will not want to make.

One mistake that many authors, especially new authors, make is assuming that others will like their book, no matter what.  It is important to remember that just because you think that your book will be a bestseller, it doesn’t mean that others will.  You do not want to be negative, but it is important not to be overly positive as well.

In fact, that is a good reason why you should consider using the services of both an editor and a literary agent.  At the very least, consider asking a few close friends or family members for their input.  This can serve as a mini focus group for yourself.

Another common mistake that many new authors make, when looking to get a book published, is by assuming that it is easy to do so.  The reality is that it is quite difficult to get a book published, especially if you are an unpublished author.  If you wish to see success, there is a lot of time that must go into your work.  Simply writing a book isn’t enough.  You need to do the proper amount of editing, proofreading, and so forth.  Although it can be very time consuming to get a book published, the reward is more than worth it.

Giving up after the first, second, third, or even forth rejection is another common mistake that many new authors make.  It is no secret that rejection hurts.  The last thing that any author wants is someone to state that their book isn’t good enough.  With that said, a rejection is what you will likely receive.

Did you know that many of the most well-known authors today were first greeted with rejection letters?  As previously stated, it isn’t easy to get a book published, but do not give up.

One of the biggest mistakes made by authors looking to get their books published is with publishers.  Here is where you want to proceed with caution, as your chances of making a costly mistake are very high.  Never submit your manuscript to a publisher without first doing the proper amount of research.

Many publishers, especially those that are well-known or large in size, want to do business with authors who have literary agents.  With that said, you do not need to have a literary agent to see your book published.  However, if you do not use an agent, do not send your manuscript to publishers that do not accept unsolicited manuscripts or those without agents.  This will likely result in your work not being looked at and you may also not even receive a reply back.

Speaking of knowing what book publishers want, one mistake that many hopeful authors make is not doing the proper amount of research.  Invest in the $20 that it takes to purchase the Writer’s Market guides or other similar resources.  They give you detailed information on what publishers accept and from whom.

For example, you may already know that Harlequin specializes in romance novels, but you may not know the specialty of other smaller publishers.  You do not want to send a romance novel to a publisher that is only seeking science fiction books and so forth.

Another little factor that you will want to take into consideration is something that will not have an impact on a large percentage of writers, but it is still an important point to make.  Do you smoke?  If you do and in your office, your papers may end up smelling like cigarette smoke.  Many publishers have noted this as being a major inconvenience and turnoff.

Gem Stones.

Meanings of Some Semi Precious Gemstones

Gemstones can be both precious and semi-precious. There are several precious gemstones sold in the market as well as semi precious stones.

Many people are familiar with the precious gemstones like pearls, rubies, and diamonds. But did you know that there are also other semi precious gems out there? That’s right and it includes alexandrite, amber, amethyst, beryl, garnet, jadeite, lapis lazuli, moonstone, opal, topaz, and turquoise.

If you want to purchase a transparent and fascinating gem, you can get alexandrite. It changes color because when you’re in broad daylight, the stone appears as bright green but when you’re indoors, it is colored raspberry red. It was only in 1831 that this stone was discovered in Russia.

Amber is not actually a gemstone, it is a fossilized tree sap. However, this is highly prized and is to be found mostly in the region of the Baltics. If you want to achieve inner peace, you can get amethyst. It is purple in color but it is also available in lighter lavender shades.

Warriors of long ago wore beryl to protect themselves. This gemstone is available in different shades such as pink, yellow, golden, emerald, and aquamarine. This is a durable stone and because of this characteristic, the stone is well known.

Historically, garnet was used mainly to stop blood diseases and hemorrhaging., but because of its durability and brilliance, this red stone is a very precious gem. The Chinese people revered jadeite and this stone came from Guatemala and Myanmar. This gemstone is also available in different colors like mottled green, whitish gray, white, pink, mauve, brown, orange, yellow, and lilac.

If you prefer intense brilliance and deep color, you can purchase lapis lazuli. You can find this stone in Argentina, Afghanistan, Chile, Russia, and Canada.

Moonstone comes from the family of feldspar. The blue moonstone varieties are far more valuable and desirable than the transparent and milky varieties. If you love the colors of the rainbow, go for opal. This stone can also be found in rare black which is really valuable.

Topaz is a gemstone that symbolizes affection and love. This is a very rare stone. It is brilliant, hard, and is available in a variety of colors. Most people are unaware that this is a rare stone and often mistakes the glass or quartz imitations as the true stones. In Africa and Asia, turquoise is very precious. It is also available in color varieties like greenish blue, light/dark blue, and robin’s egg shade.

These are some of the semi precious gemstones in the world. You can find these stones in major jewelry stores worldwide. However, beware of imitations.  Make sure that you’re only purchasing genuine stones. If this is your first time to purchase a precious gemstone, make sure that you’re dealing with a reputable jewelry store. If you’re shopping online, you can check the customer testimonials to ensure the quality and genuineness of the gemstone.

Precious and semi precious gemstones are good investments. If you want, you can get your specific birthstone. Search the internet and find out more about the different gemstones for every month. There is a wealth of information on the internet that can help you in choosing the best deal gemstones in the market.

Eveyone likes gemstones. Buy one as a gift to yourself or see the delight on the faces of your friends and loved ones.

Cosmetics Surgery.

Common Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Have you recently decided that you would like to improve your physical appearance, namely by way of cosmetic surgery?  If so, have you already decided on a course of treatment?  Although a cosmetic surgeon can help you make your decision, there are a number of benefits to having a good idea of what you want before you attend a consultation appointment.

So, what type of cosmetic surgery should you undergo?  If you still aren’t sure yet, you may want to first take the time to familiarize yourself with some common procedures.  To help get you started, a few of your surgical options are highlighted below and briefly summarized.

Mammoplasty is a term that is used to commonly describe cosmetic surgical procedures that are performed on the breasts.  As for what these procedures are, there are three main ones.  A breast lift involves the reshaping of the breasts.  It is often performed to reduce the saggy skin that results from excess weight loss and aging.  Breast augmentation, which is also commonly referred to as a breast enlargement, involves the use of implants, most often silicone, to increase breast size.  On the other hand, breast reduction involves the reduction of tissue and skin to reduce the size of the breasts.

A facelift is another common cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed.  Typically, those who are looking to reduce or completely eliminate their wrinkles and slow the signs of aging opt for facelifts.  Cosmetic facelift surgeries are also commonly known as rhinoplasty.

Liposuction is another common cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed on men and women.  Liposuction involves the removal of excess body fat from problem areas.  These problem areas are typically the abdominal area, the thighs, and the underarms.  Liposuction should not be confused with gastric bypass surgery and other similar procedures.  These types of surgeries are often considered part of a weight loss plan, whereas liposuction isn’t typically.  With liposuction, a small amount of fat, usually between five to ten pounds, is removed.

When we often think of cosmetic surgery, the phrase “going under the knife,” is often the first thing that comes to mind.  While most cosmetic surgeries are considered invasive, not all require the breaking of the skin.  This is thanks to laser surgery.  Laser skin resurfacing is another common cosmetic procedure that is performed by qualified surgeons.  Laser skin resurfacing is often use to smooth out imperfections, including small scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and well as to remove tattoos or birthmarks.  Laser surgery can also be used to remove unwanted hair, as well as to reduce the need for glasses and contacts.

In keeping with cosmetic procedures that don’t involve actual cutting, there is that of chemical peels.  Although chemical peels are offered by a number of establishments, including day spas, you may find the most comfort undergoing them at a qualified cosmetic surgery center.  Chemical peels, as with laser skin resurfacing, can reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, and acne.

In addition to the above mentioned cosmetic surgery procedures, which focus on the body and skin in general, cosmetic dentistry should also be examined.  After all, what good would a “new body,” do if your teeth aren’t up to standard?  Cosmetic density is a field that is increasing in popularity, as more individuals start to take note of the health and appearance of their teeth.  Common surgical procedures involved in cosmetic dentistry include the insertion of a dental implant and a gum lift.

As you can see, you have a number of different options when looking to improve your physical appearance by way of cosmetic surgery.  What is even more amazing is that these are just a few of your options.  Other areas that people, just like you, target include the buttocks, the chin, the checks, the eyelids, and the nose.  As a reminder, a qualified cosmetic surgeon should be able to help you decide on the best course of action, so schedule a consultation appointment today.

Adult Dyslexia.

Adult Dyslexia Late Diagnosis: Is There Still Hope?

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that affects people of all ages. Just as with other disabilities, early detection of the condition and early intervention are beneficial to the person with the disability. However, this is not always the case with dyslexia.

An Overlooked Beginning

Most of the time, the beginnings of dyslexia is overlooked, which is the reason why a lot of cases are only diagnosed during adulthood. To think of it, in present culture when a child has not yet learned to fluently read by the age of ten or eleven years, he or she would be often thought of to be lacking in motivation or intelligence.

Most people would think that they are stupid or lazy. However, in most cases, they are neither of the two. Most likely, they have dyslexia, which is a learning disability that causes their difficulty in understanding written language, even though they have normal or even higher-than-normal IQ.

Faulty Wiring And Early Detection

The most recent studies show that the difficulties in reading that dyslexic people experience are due to "faulty wiring" in specific brain areas that have a relation to learning and language. Research also shows that identifiable genetic variations or defects are the partial cause of this faulty wiring.

Early screening and detection for such variations makes it possible for you to have appropriate and timely remedial training. Most experts suggest that children should be allowed to deal with their condition to overcome it and at least learn how to read at an acceptable level. However, since dyslexia is sometimes only diagnosed during adulthood, the benefits of early detection are not maximized.

Late Detection

Although there are people who only become dyslexic during their adulthood, due to stroke and traumatic brain injury, in most cases the condition is a developmental disorder. According to experts, still, the majority of cases reported of people with dyslexia are adults who have had it ever since childhood but only knew they had it when they were already adults.

This late detection of the condition is something most adult dyslexics are troubled with since early intervention is not a choice anymore. However, if you are one of those who had late detection, there is no reason to be troubled. Intervention no matter how early or late is still intervention, even though they may have varying effects.

The Issue On Brain Plasticity

Late detection becomes an issue due to the premise of brain plasticity. Research shows that younger people or even animals have a more elastic brain than older counterparts. The relevance of brain plasticity is that it is one important factor in relation to  intervention.

Since the brain is more elastic when you are younger; rewiring of the brain is then possible, since it hasn’t reached its mature state and continues to develop. Thus, if ever a learning disability like dyslexia is present, then your brain can still be developed to function at a more acceptable level, where the condition has minimal effect.

A lot of adults recently diagnosed with the condition fear that intervention would do them no good, simply because their brain is not as elastic anymore as children’s. However, recent studies show that the brain’s property of elasticity is still present even with adults.

This recent finding on plasticity in the adult brain is a breakthrough for adult dyslexics. So if you are an adult that had late diagnosis, then be happy! There is still hope for your condition to improve, even if only to an acceptable level.

Cats Behaviour.

Tips for Understanding Your Cat

Are you a new pet owner?  If you have just purchased a new cat, you may be excited!  After all, you should be.  Owning a cat is a huge responsibility, but it is one that is filled with many great rewards.  There is nothing better than seeing love and compassion in the eyes of your cat.  In fact, that it not all that you will see.

When you and your new pet get to know each other more, you will begin to notice many traits and characteristics that your cat displays.  After all, all living animals have their own personalities.  In no time at all, you will be understanding your cat, just like he or she is one of the kids or another human being.

As nice as it is to hear that you may be understanding your pet in no time at all, you may be looking for more information.  After all, you may be curious as to how you will understand your pet.  No, you will not receive a human response when talking to your pet, but there are other signals that your pet may send you.  To be the best pet owner possible and to provide your cat with proper care, it is important for you notice and take action when these signals are displayed.

So, what signal should you look for when understanding your cat?  For starters, do you know when your cat may be ready to fight?  Whether your cat is ready to attack you, another person in your home, or another pet, this is a sign that you need to be on the lookout for.  Although cats are almost always safe and cuddly, some do have anger issues.  If your cat has his head down and is in a crouching position, he may be ready to pounce.  Many cats will also try to hide behind an object, such as a couch so that they cannot be seen.

Cats, like humans, and other pets can develop a wide array of emotions, including anger.  Even if your cat does not pounce or attack, he or she may still be upset.  Many cats will move their tail in a horizontal pattern.  In fact, it will seem like your cat is lashing his or her tail back and forth, not just moving it.  Some cats will also deal with their anger by hiding or retreating to an area that they feel comfortable or safe in.

Although some cats will pounce with the intent to play, many other cats will display other playful signals.  A happy cat and one who wants to play is usually very active.  Your cat, when happy and excited, may always be on the move.  He or she may be extra cuddly with you, hoping that you will provide them with extra attention and playtime.  Another sign of a happy and excited cat is one whose head, tail, and ears are straight up.

As previously stated, the reward of being a cat owner is seeing love and compassion in your cat’s eyes.  What you may not realize is that this is actually something that you may be able to notice.  It has been said that cats who squint when looking at you, are showing you that they do love and care for you.  It has also been said that biting and licking are additional ways that cats show love and affection.

The above mentioned examples, are just a few of the many that you will want to be on lookout for when trying to understand your cat.  As a reminder, the process of understanding your cat isn’t one that should be rushed.  All you need to do is give your cat the proper amount of love and attention, watch their reactions, and make note of any habits your new friend may develop.  In time, you will and your new pet will soon be understanding each other.

Coffee Review.

Espresso Versus Cappucino

Being a coffee and caffeine addict, as many people claim themselves to be, often involves drinking many types of coffee products, such as espresso, cappuccino, regular coffee, as well as many other forms of the drink itself. However, one aspect of coffee that many people mistakenly get wrong is the fact that they think espresso and cappuccino are the same exact drink when in fact they are not. Even though espresso and cappuccino may look like the same drink and may be considered the same by the average coffee drinker, for true espresso fans, espresso is a totally different drink altogether!

Here are some of the main differences between the two drinks and perhaps some reasons why many people prefer one over the other:

Cappuccino is Generic

Perhaps one of the reasons that many people consider cappuccino to be an espresso drink is because cappuccino has traditionally been a coffee drink that has had some espresso in it. Even though cappuccino is more of a regular coffee consistency the first form of cappuccino was made partly from espresso. Nevertheless, though, since cappuccino isn't 100% espresso then they naturally have very different tastes. On the other hand many people who dislike regular espresso will often turn to cappuccino for a spruced up version of many of the coffee brands that they drink! For this reasons, though, some individuals may refer to cappuccino as a generic form of espresso considering the fact that it has much less espresso than the real thing!

Espresso Characteristics

When trying to distinguish between cappuccino and espresso perhaps the most defining characteristic of espresso is the fact that the drink is much thicker than its cappuccino or coffee counterpart! Much of this is due to the fact that espresso has to be made from an espresso machine whereas coffee and other types of cappuccino can either be handmade or placed in a coffee percolator that will give them the desired result. Perhaps, however, this is one way that many people are able to distinguish between espresso and virtually every other type of coffee anyway. Espresso machines are typically depicted as large machines that have many parts to it, but there is a long process that the espresso goes through in order to be just right for the person drinking it!

Cappuccino and Espresso Lovers

What are some of the reasons, though, that espresso may be liked over cappuccino or vice versa? One of the reasons that many people like cappuccino is because it is less thick than regular espresso. Many people's stomachs may not be able to handle all types of espresso, which is the reason that cappuccino may be more readily available in restaurants and other coffee shops than espresso is.

Altogether, though, it's important to realize that there indeed is a difference between the two coffee drinks. Espresso and cappuccino are two very different drinks in nature and have very different defining characteristics, as well as attract two different types of coffee drinkers as well!
